The pressure of the impaction, whether it is mild or severe, results to the spasms radiating to the back and leads to a frustrating and debilitating pain. Inversely speaking, severe back pain from strenuous activities or surgeries could also affect the function of autonomic nerves that maintains the function of bowel movements. This is why constipation is usually manifested by patients in the recovery phase.

What are the symptoms of Back Pain and Constipation?

The most common symptoms that would be observed when back pain and constipation is both present includes fatigue, the patient may report radiating pain down the leg, the gait, spinal mobility and reflexes may be affected, difficulty of having bowel movements, swollen and tender abdomen, abdominal pain and vomiting.

An upper back pain is not particularly common but it can be very painful. It is a tension on the upper part of your back towards your neck. It is usually cause by muscle irritation or joint dysfunction, but it could also be seen in some rare cases such as spinal disc herniation. While lower back pain may be caused by many factors. But the most common would be ligament and muscle damage. The tension is located on the lower half of your back, including your buttocks. It could manifest due to sudden movements or injuries, muscle spasms, compressed nerves or bad posture. Either one of these two or both could be present with constipation.

What are the remedies for Back Pain and Constipation

First, you must remember that water is an essential need of your body so that it could function properly. Drink 2-3L of water per day if you have constipation. In that way, any blockage or fecal impaction could be resolved. Increase your dietary fiber intake to facilitate a good digestion. Add some fruits and vegetables in all your meals. Next, you could also try lying down on a flat surface and try to put your legs on a chair. This would remove the pressure on your lower back. You could also walk and stretch every now and then to loosen the tension on your muscles. Try adding brisk walks into your daily routine or you could go swimming regularly. This would promote the stimulation of your bowel movements. It would also strengthen your abdominal and back muscles, relieving the pain and the pressure. If these would not be effective, then you must consult your physician. Don’t self-medicate because it may only worsen the back pain and constipation that you have.
